Parade of the Flags

"The March of the Republic" that I told you about has taken place today in Ankara.

Associated Press reports it with the following sentences:

"Some 300,000 Turks protested against their Islamic-rooted prime minister Saturday, demonstrating the intense opposition he will face from Turkeys secular establishment if he decides to run for president next month.

Protesters draped themselves in the flag and poured into the capitals streets and squares, calling on the government to resign and chanting slogans including, 'We dont want an imam as president.'"

The figure of 300.000 might not seem so huge for some people, but for Turkey, it is probably the highest ever turnout for such a protest. Turks, not like Spanish people who mobilize even millions to protest for instance terrorism, have got no such protesting culture.

This march is a great sign of the popular support for secular democracy in Turkey, especially through such hard days.
