A Good Hearted Dictator?

Google has put online the entire collection of photos from the legendary but now defunct LIFE magazine.

While searching for photos about Turkey, I stumbled upon a discoursive dilemma.

In one photo caption, Ataturk was labelled as "a dictator."

However, in another one, it is said that "all Turkish women love Ataturk because he freed them from the prisons of their home."

So even if he was a dictator, it seems that it was definitely needed. Don't you need to dictate to come through the darkness?

At the end of the day, Ataturk was not a dictator. Someone similar to Platon's Philosopher King, he was the Modernising Autocrat, who was the only viable figure in his time to lead an anachronic society towards secular democracy.
