In Rome, Don't Be Different, Be One Of Us!

What is the most dangerous trend in our world?

I believe that it is the increasingly popularized attitude, which can be summarized with the following motto:

"Don't be different. Be one of us."

These words are not obscenely racist.

You can even add a "please" to these commanding phrases to make them sound more polite.

Alas, the fascist undertone will recur...

There, in the Gulf states where democratic rights are being systematically repressed, maybe not as brutally as in Syria, but surely in Iran...

There, in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, two allies of the Western world whom enjoy a malign immunity...

Another awareness campaign is launched through the social media by a group of women.

"Najla Al Mahmoud is a Qatari behind the 'One of Us' public awareness push, which hopes to educate expatriates about appropriate dress. Specifically, she wants people - men and women - in her country to cover up between the shoulders and the knees."

So, why the same groups of people oppose the burqa ban or the minaret ban in Europe?

If you should "do what Romans do when in Rome", why do you start to talk about your freedom to dress as you want in Europe, but force others to adopt your fashion in the Middle East?

I'm a staunch multiculturalist not only because I find it closer to my heart as a human, but also because it's the easiest way to escape from such hypocrisy, such double-standards.

Let's just don't impose our values on anyone in anywhere.

Let's be neither Bin Laden nor Breivik.

Let's reject closet fascism in our daily lives, too.

Let's be as honorable and humane as the people of Norway, who sang that song in spite, celebrating multiculturalism.

Let's don't fiddle when Rome burns.
