John Ralston Saul, President of PEN International is in Istanbul. He will leave tomorrow.
He led a delegation of twenty PEN members, which is a historical record for this respected organization, to visit Turkey in order to support the jailed journalists. Eight of those journalists are PEN members.
In Ankara, the PEN delegation met President Abdullah Gul, as well as EU Minister Egemen Bagis.
I had a brief interview with Mr. Saul three days ago in Istanbul and asked about his impressions. His speech was nothing short of a great lecture on the importance of the freedom of expression.
