It can be argued that the Sledgehammer Case, with its "doctored evidence", is the most controversial judicial process in Turkey.
Following Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's olive branch to a convicted general, the High Court of Appeal has just started the final procudure to ultimately approve or reverse the judgment.
Now, the court designates an interesting number for the case notification: 66666.
According to today's report by Hurriyet, a defence lawyer said that "66" means "Allah" in Abjad, an Islamic kabbalah-like method. They argue that this is meaningful, because the authorities try to imply that "only God can save the defendants now" and not even Erdogan.
Hurriyet's sources in the office of the chief prosecutor disagree. They say that this is just a concidence, although they admit that the numerological order is sometimes broken to assign catchy numbers to remember important cases with too many defendants.
On the other hand, neither defence lawyers nor the prosecution mentioned anything about the number 666, which represents Satan in Christianity and the creation, as well as the perfection, of the world in Kabbalistic Judaism.
So, considering all Abrahamic religions, 66+666 seems like a very divine number!
But is it a bad omen for Turkey's democracy?
